Particularly, in China, several rounds of corporate governance reforms have been implemented to improve the quality of the banking industry and enhance financial stability. Using unbalanced panel data for Chinese commercial banks for 2009–2012, this study empirically examines the effects of the characteristics of bank directors on banking performance. Our empirical results find statistically significant evidence of board hierarchy: a director with a higher ranking has more decision-making power than the others. We also find the negative impact of female directors, directors with accounting expertise, and those with a financial background on a bank’s performance. In addition, it is noteworthy that corporate governance should account for a nation’s characteristics and thus, we attempt to identify corporate governance that is most suitable for China. 梁馨予 2015 學位論文 ; thesis 76 zh-TW
