A Study of the Police Spiritual Health:An Example of Hualien County Police Bureau

碩士 === 佛光大學 === 未來與樂活產業學系 === 103 === Spirituality is the motive force of human evolution. Spiritual health is the common demand for all human beings, up to a point that it becomes a universal value. The researcher had been serving in the police for 32 years, with whose other three family members all being police officers. Though having passion and sense of mission, the career life of police is always pressurized. Sparing efforts without spiritual care may lead to exhaustion of the body and mind as the passion to their career. Therefore spiritual health is especially important to be concerned. This research aims at investigating policemen's spiritual health. Questionnaire inquiry is employed in the study, applying to a random sample of the incumbent officers' at Hualien County Police Bureau, with an effective return of 432 questionnaires(91.9%). With the use of statistical software suite SPSS for Windows 20.0, basic data are being analyzed by means of descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, two-way ANOVA, Pearson Product-Moment Correlation. The followings are the conclusions: 1.As for personal attributes: Marriage and family life are important to shifting police officers; while senior officers, having more working experiences, would have greater extends of pressure resistance than their junior follows, who gain by life experiences after increment of age and length of service, with more profound enlightenment to the universe and nature. 2.As for working attributes: The more senior positions the policemen are, the more spiritual healthy they are, especially compared to the grassroots policemen. It is due to the fact the the latter are the executor of the front line public order, facing more pressures from the senior police and when dealing with the issues of the masses. Thus, grassroots policemen, being as the majority, should seek for better spiritual health; Additionally, policemen to perform indoor duties could have better spiritual health than one performing outdoor duties, because the former have fixed working hours and simpler by means of the nature of task, compared with the latter's reverse of day and night life for long term, as well as the complex and dangerous nature of task. 3.As for spiritual level: The policemen with frequent involvement in religious activities are of better spiritual health, indicating that religious engagement functions to integrate the body and mind, and would enlighten the spirituality that is beneficial to spiritual growth; Moreover, those policemen with spiritual practice are of better health status than those without, showing that vitality being brought forth by spiritual courses and religious activities. 4.The other variables such as gender, school and education level, type of duty show no differences on overall status of spiritual health. Thus, the study based on the above results provides the policemen, the Hualien County Police Bureau and the related police department in general the following suggestions: encourage and support the police officers to join spiritual-growth related course study; encourage the officers to seek for inner sustenance via religious faith; promote the establishment of"police spiritual health advancement association" by the police institution; add spiritual growth course in the curriculum of National Police Agency's Police Cultivation Education and during the in-service training; expand the spiritual health research area by the police related departments, such as to the policemen from the others districts, to compare between the policemen in the cities and villages, or to establish a spiritual health measuring scale which adopts to Taiwan so that in-depth comparison analysis of policemen's spiritual health is possible; the finally, promote the spiritual health of the policemen, hence they can work under highly pressurized environment, with rekindled passion for services, so as to play a role of “nanny” to the people.
