The designed system aims to enhance the required safety and utility of navigation for the wheelchair user driving in the outdoor environment. Furthermore, with the aid of the system, the awareness of the user can be effectively improved for the driving situation in the unfamiliar environment. The main control system on the intelligent wheelchair makes use of the GPS module of the smart phone from which the positioning data can be accessed. Then, the current position and navigation information can be displayed on the human-machine interface (HMI). Through this HMI, the user can determine the target location, and the path planning results can be provided from the digital map on the smart phone. Afterward the system can inform the user the required motion tasks toward the target location and the destination arrival. This study has the implications for the implementation of the proposed system on the intelligent wheelchair to support the user more situation awareness under different environment while driving.
