Among them, Poetry Buddha, Wang Wei, represents Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. In his old age, he excelled in combining the philosophy of Zen with poetry, marking a brilliant page in the literary history of Tang Dynasty—Zen poetry. Readers can surely aware his life attitude filled with Zen from his poetry. Wang Wei use the means of literature and the form of poetry to advocate the philosophy of Zen. Meanwhile, he integrates his Zen cognitive experience and immediate feelings about the worship of Buddha, emotionalizing and visualizing the esoteric religious theories in the form of his poetry, which presents one kind of unique charm and delight. His poetry comforted the literati’s spirit and soul at present as well as the time later, which makes himself an important influence on the fields of poetry and Zen. At the old age of Xuanzong, the emperor of Tang dynasty, the political unrest made Wang Wei suffer from his career setback and experience the death of loved ones. Confronting the adversity in life, Zen became Wang Wei’s spiritual commitment and the inspiration for his creation. Therefore, Wang Wei’s Zen poetry shows the magnanimous mind, which is characterized by being easy-going. This essay is focused on analyzing the religious trend which affected Wang Wei’s thought in the social background of Tang Dynasty and enumerating the poetic works which contained Zen thought as the reference. Based on the reference, the essay is meant to annotate Wang Wei’s mood and motivation for his creation, and therefore, to summarize Wang Wei’s understanding and perceptive on life, which can be a reference to modern life education.
