When Xie Lingyun saw the change of the natural landscape, his heart would be touched, so he would make a sightseeing tour and live in the mountains to escape the reality. He did not know how to choose, so that "lonely", "no confidant" often become Xie poetry emotional tone. Xie Lingyun did not want to enter politics just want to retreat, but when he retired, he had no way to forget the idea, for the benefit of people. Xie Lingyun had been back and forth between political participation and seclusion, and the poet's heart was full of pain, he did not know how to choose. So future generations of people think Xie Lingyun was Living in the natural landscape, but the heart want to enter politics. At last his life could not naturally end. However, Xie Lingyun not only wanted to reclusive thought, but also wanted to benefit society. Looking at Xie Lingyun's life, at the beginning of Xie Lingyun into the officialdom, he believed that "Norm is Nature", and he implemented Taoist "Actionless Governance". During the period of Yongjia, Xie Lingyun was not only the implementation of "Actionless Governance" governance, also paid attention to people's life. Because, he wanted to let people’s life become rich. During seclusion, Xie Lingyun was full of concern for all creatures in nature, and he hope that he could help sentient beings. When Xie Lingyun re entered the officialdom, he wanted to rescue the people living in the north of foreign rule would not be bullied. He hoped to use the Confucian rites and music teaches people, and he wanted to make people tend to the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Before dying, he prayed to God let him be reborn as human beings can help everyone, and he prayed afterlife life in the world of equality. So Xie Lingyun always had "administer the place and benefit society", "contribute his skill to the society", and "save the troubled society" thoughts.
