Previous research on knowledge and innovation have mainly focused on how internal and external knowledge influence innovation performance. Our study concentrates on exploring the relationship between external knowledge and innovation, especially highlighting spillover knowledge pool. We also examine how changes in firm knowledge couplings and technological complexity moderate the effects of spillover knowledge pool on innovation performance. Taking the firms in semiconductor industry in Taiwan from 2009 to 2012 as samples, the empirical result shows that there is a positive relationship between spillover knowledge pool and innovation performance. As for the moderating effect of changes in firm knowledge coupling,the changes of knowledge basic negatively impact the relationship between spillover knowledge pool and innovation performance. Finally, the moderating effect of technological complexity on the relationship between spillover knowledge pool and innovation performance haven’t been empirically supported by our study.
