Summary: | 碩士 === 國立中興大學 === 台灣文學與跨國文化研究所 === 103 === The thesis is an analysis of Liao Hui-Ying’s “Old Taiwan Tetralogy,” including Zhan Zhuan Hong Lian (1993), Fu Jun Qian Hang Lei (1994), Xiang Feng Yi Xiao Gung Qian Ting (1994) and Yue Ying (1996). My thesis explores the inclination towards “mild feminism” Liao has shown in her works of 1990s. Instead of adopting radical stance of feminism and gender discourse, Liao’s mild feminism in her “Old Taiwan Tetralogy” truly opens female negotiations with society in a strategic way. Liao’s approachable writing style and different aspects of life experience of her female characters in the past Taiwan society not only touch readers and evoke their sympathy, but, most importantly, have a progressive influence on them to rethink the gender issue and criticize the oppression of women by patriarchy in private sphere, family space in particular. Therefore, as far as I am concerned, gender positioning and perspective stressed in “Old Taiwan Tetralogy” are engaged in, besides the contemplation of self-consciousness of female characters, Liao’s pursuit of equality of the sexes.
