In the studies of linguistics and translation, gender linguistic features have been used as main indicators to uncover gender differences. Many gender linguistic features have been uncovered in linguistics studies and applied in translation studies in order to find if male and female translators translate differently. The current study is designed to investigate four versions of Chinese translation of The Great Gatsby and to find the gender linguistic features inside, hoping to uncover the influence of gender on translation. Five criteria were analyzed in this thesis: first-person pronouns, particles, hedges, type/token ration and mean length sentence. The findings indicate that the female translators used more modal particles and hedges; therefore, the translations of the female translators better expressed the emotions of the characters and also provided less precise information. The female translators had higher type/token ratio, indicating that they had higher lexical diversity. The male translators used more wo (我; I or me ) and structural particles; therefore, the translations of the male translators emphasized the self-identity of the characters and also provided more precise information. However, no obvious differences were found in the use of wo men (我們; we or us) and mean length sentence. According to the findings, except for wo men (我們; we or us) and mean length sentence, the other criteria point out that gender has influences on the male and the female translators' word choices and translation strategies. There are also other possible factors that might influence the results, such as the ages of the translators or the genders of the characters. Ting-hui Wen 温婷惠 學位論文 ; thesis 76 en_US |
