Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立宜蘭大學 === 應用經濟與管理學系經營管理碩士班 === 103 === Burkina Faso has no diplomatic relationship with the People’s Republic of China. In contrast to this, it has held such a tie with Taiwan since 1994. Despite the absence of diplomatic relations between Mainland China and Burkina Faso, the Chinese presence has been increasing within the relatively small West African nation. Even as Chinese multinationals successfully penetrate the business sectors, Taiwanese investment in Burkina Faso remains statistically weak in comparison to that of China’s business investors. This study aimed at determining the factors contributing to the inarguably “low key presence” of Taiwanese business interests in Burkina Faso. The motivation of undertaking this study is that it may contribute positively toward motivating Taiwanese investment in Burkina Faso, which would be highly beneficial to the economy of Burkina Faso while also offering the possibility of strong profits for Taiwanese businesses. In this study, in order to define the problem and to go deeper into issues of Taiwanese investment in Burkina Faso, the qualitative research approach, consisting of semi-structured face-to-face interviews, was adopted as the method of inquiry. This method has numerous advantages, allowing for pre-planning by the interviewer while allowing the interviewees some flexibility and 22 interviews was conducted. The findings revealed the low presence of Taiwanese in Burkina Faso is due to the fact that Taiwan investors do not have the right information about Burkina Faso or other African countries. This lack of information extends to their investment opportunities and the entrepreneurial behaviour in that uncertain environment. As a result of this situation, investors are unaware of the possibilities for profit that come with investment in Burkina Faso while simultaneously holding negative impressions of the country (if they know of it at all) which the lack of information available does little to counteract. Findings also indicated that Taiwanese investors require more security than Chinese investors, and that this need is currently not being met by Burkina Faso. Based on these findings, subsequent and practical suggestions are made with the aim to make of Burkina Faso a country that is attractive enough to potential Taiwanese investors. It’s propose an improvement of Burkina Faso’s investment regulation and policy to attract more investors, development of infrastructures, promote more the investment sectors by making information’s available and easy to access. Taiwanese government should also produce its own information documents targeting potential Taiwanese investors in Burkina Faso. This study will first have a brief introduction to how this research has proceeded, followed by a review of the published literature related to the overall economic investment in Burkina Faso by both Taiwan and China. An explanation of the qualitative analytical methodology to be employed will then precede a discussion of the interview method used and the process called upon to get the information from investors. The conclusion wraps up the results of this work and makes suggestions for improvement of the situation, including offering ways to improve the confidence of potential investors, improvements to Burkina Faso’s infrastructure in order to make it a more appealing possibility and ideas for improving Burkina Faso’s academic profile by using Asian countries as models.
