碩士 === 國立高雄第一科技大學 === 風險管理與保險研究所 === 103 === The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of inheritance on the health, the demand for commercial health insurance and the out-of-pocket medical expenditure. We employ data from the year 1999 to 2006 in Survey of Family Income and Expenditure by Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) for out-of-pocket medical expenditure in conducting our empirical analysis. Since household income salary in the regression may be endogenous, we use instrumental variables and two-stage least squares instead of the ordinary least squares to solve the endogeneity problem inherent the econometric model. The findings of this study are as follows. First, the inheritances have significantly negative effect on the demand for commercial health insurance. Second, the inheritances not only have significantly positive effect on the medical expenditure reimbursed by National Health Insurance (NHI) but also on all three kinds of out-of-pocket medical expenditure, i.e., the preventive, the cured, and the folk medical expenditure.
