碩士 === 國立高雄師範大學 === 地理學系 === 103 === Since 1960, the government has started developing dairying in specialized dairy areas in Western Taiwan, but omitting Eastern Taiwan. This research discusses the development of dairying in Eastern Taiwan by depth interviews, including the locational change and operation adjustment strategies. This paper analyzes the dairying characteristics in Eastern Taiwan by using Porter’s Diamond Model Theory. According to the interviews, the number of dairy farms in Hualien has decreased to 4 in 2014 but they have not moved from in Rueisuei. Dairy farms in Taitung are in Beinan Township with Chulu Ranch as the core. The location has not changed but the number of farmers is decreasing too. Now there are just six farms including Chulu Ranch. Farmers in Rueisuei would first sell their produce locally and then work with Uni-President, a collaborating factory, in order to send their milk to Western Taiwan. Similarly, farmers in Beinan would collaborate with Chulu Ranch instead. In recent years, facing with foreign dairy product competition, Taiwanese milk are often manufactured as liquid dairy. However, Taiwanese milk faces shortages from the growing sales of beverages and hot coffee from shops and convenience stores. Face with public scrutiny with milk quality, dairy factories are starting to pay more attention to the milk quality as well. First, dairying in Eastern Taiwan is advertised as pollution-free; second they adjusted their operations to promote their efficiency and quality. Some farms even start to transform into leisure ranches to promote their values. This is a characteristic of adjustment in Eastern Taiwan dairy farming.
