The In-Vehicle Navigation Systems providing drivers related traffic information can reduce drivers’ cognitive load. In distributed cognition theory, knowledge lies not only within the individual, but also in the individual's social and physical environment. The goal of this study based on the distributed cognition theory, is to understand the cognitive process of driver and In-Vehicle Navigation System by studying the cognitive process of driver and navigator. The joint driver and navigator cognitive model can be used as a reference in the development of In-Vehicle Navigation System. Based on the joint driver and In-Vehicle Navigation System cognitive model, the navigation syntax of the In-Vehicle Navigation System is redesigned. The redesigned navigation syntax is tested by usability evaluation. The result of the usability evaluation shows that redesigned navigation syntax are better than the existing navigation systems in five usability indicators, learnability, memorability, efficiency, errors and satisfaction.
