The culture of the first generation of western painters mostly took place in Japan. After restoration, they continued to shoulder the mission of cultivation and inheritance. The political and social situation of the cultural period of the second generation of western painters was thoroughly changed, as they were influenced not only by Chinese arts, as brought by the National Government that migrated to Taiwan after WWII, but also by European and American schools of painting introduced by Americans in the Cold War, resulting in vigorous and flourishing arts development in Taiwan. This was reflected in their works. The subject of this paper is Chia-Chu Chien, a typical second generation Western school painter, who was born at the end of Japanese Occupation Period and grew up in early liberation period. His painting enlightenment and cultivating processes were inherited from first generation western painters, while his paintings, indirectly baptized by European and American art schools, were dyed with China traditional art and filled with the reflection of nostalgia. Integrated by Chinese, Japanese, and Western art schools, his works displays unique individual painting style with mixed media on opaque watercolor. This paper explores the painting cultivation of Chia-Chu Chien, and adopts in-depth interviews and literature analysis by referring to his famous works, exhibited painting albums, and painting reviews in art books, as well as unpublished new paintings, in order to discuss his growth background and the relation to Taiwan’s first generation Western school painters during the cultivation period. Separate chapters were written to explore the impacts of contemporary Japanese and Western Impressionists on Chien’s paintings, and clarify his creation lines of following Realism, applying heavy color, impasto, and stack skills, as well as high chroma and saturated hue to construct individual paintings. Finally, his works were verified, and his painting styles were analyzed and interpreted.
