Summary:碩士 === 國立臺灣師範大學 === 表演藝術研究所 === 103 === Aaron Copland (1900-1990) is an iconic figure in American music in the 20th century. His entire life is dedicated to creating and promoting American-style music with American spirits. This study explores Copland’s Duo for Flute and Piano (1971), commissioned by the American flutist John Solum, in memory of William Kincaid, a great flutist of the time. This work of Copland epitomizes the composer’s style, adopting the various signature techniques in all periods of his music. This study is written in five chapters. The Introduction explains the background and purpose of research, as well as the scope and methodology of this study. The Literature Review summarizes historical development of American music, the life of Copland and his musical style, and the background of Duo for Flute and Piano. The third chapter analyzes Duo for Flute and Piano and gains a better understanding of the composition techniques used by Copland. Following the analysis, the fourth chapter presents an interpretation of the piece from a piano collaborator’s point of view, with some performance suggestions to pianists. The fifth chapter compares different recordings of Duo for Flute and Piano, and is followed by the conclusion.
