Prokofiev wrote a wide range of musical genres including symphony, orchestra music, ballets, operas, piano music, and film music. Through an understanding of Prokofiev’s historical context in this paper, my study delves into the Neo-Classicism-based creation techniques of one of his sonata, Flute Sonata in D Major, and characteristics of the musical composition of this sonata. Prokofiev’s works had been influenced by some of Neo-Classicism composers then when musical forms usually adopted traditional musical forms, such as sonata and toccata, etc., and new elements of harmony and creation techniques were applied to the creation of a simple and unsophisticated music with a new conception. Prokofiev’s composition features the unexpected transposition, the application of bold harmony, intensive rhythm and charming melody, and a distinctive style not succumbed to secularization that led him to a success to go on his own musical style in classical music of the 20th century. This paper is divided into four chapters. Chapter One Introduction focuses on the research motivation, purpose, research scope, and method; Chapter Two gives an introduction of Sergei Prokofiev’s life to lead readers to an understanding of this composer’s historical context and important compositional works; Chapter Three focuses on the historical context in the composition of Prokofiev’s Flute Sonata in D Major as well as the analysis of musical form and performance interpretation of each movement of this sonata in sequence, and Chapter Four Conclusion. Through the analysis and study of this paper, I hope to gain insights into the grasp of Prokofiev’s techniques of expression and performance skills and musical interpretation in hopes of giving more complete and perfect expression when performing this piece Hwang, Cheng-Yin 黃貞瑛 2015 學位論文 ; thesis 42 zh-TW
