After the Duke of Zhou made editions to the dances from former six dynasties, a complete ritual system was formed. In the past, the scale of Ya Yue was used to differentiate social classes and to educate; it was used in rituals and banquets. Every dynasty had different views on the preservation of the Ya Yue in former dynasty and the new creation in the contemporary time. Based on the texts, after many dynasties of blending, transforming and spreading, Ya Yue is now not only referring to the one in Zhou Dynasty but also to the music and dances performed in the rituals and banquets of ancient palace. A great amount of imperial music and dances were spread into countries near China, such as Korea, Japan and Vietnam, due to their close interaction with China. Ya Yue in these three countries were more completely preserved than China itself. For instance, in Korea, there is a National Center set up for Korean Traditional Performing Arts which conducts researches and performances of traditional music and dances. Imperial Household Agency in Japan is responsible for Ya Yue Court orchestra performances. There are also many folk groups in Japan studying Ya Yue. The imperial Ya Yue developed in Vietnam was placed in the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO in 2003. Nanhua University Ya Yu Court Orchestra is one of the national orchestra which performed Ya Yue pieces the most, and is namely the one and only orchestra that still performs ancient imperial music and dances today. This research is based on the example of o Nanhua University Ya Yue Court Orchestra, studying the development and its way of performances of Ya Yue in Taiwan as to see how Ya Yue was reproduced and interpreted in the Ya Yue Court Orchestra. The development and the performances of Ya Yue in Japan and Korea are also described and compared, aiming to provide a certain reference value in the studies of Ya Yue in Taiwan.
