The Southern Min in Taiwan is from Southern Min area - Zhangzhou & Quanzhou. But the accent in Taiwan is not like neither Zhangzhou nor Quanzhou . It explores the similarities and differences of vowels in Southern Min in Qingshui, and further to compare with the southern Min in Koahsiung examines the empirical vowel productions. To accomplish the purposes, 30 native speakers in Qingshui (15 males and 15 females, average age: 58) were enrolled. They were asked to read designed lists consisted of 6 Southern Min vowels (/i, e, a, o, u, B/). All their articulations were recorded and analyzed by Praat software which characterizes sounds by showing frequencies like F0 (pitch) F1 (height), F2 (advancement). F3 ( lip-rounding) and duration. Our findings are in the aspect of similarities and differences, (1) in general, the pitch (F0) of females are higher than males in Qingshui area. Qingshui males tongue position is higher and backward than females. As for F3, the oral shape of females is rounder than males. Nasalizes are similar to vowels, males tongue position is higher and more backward than females. (2) In vowels, Qingshui male /i/、/u/、/o/ is far different from Kaohsiung local citizens ; Qingshui female’s tongue position is almost the same as Kaohsiung local citizens. But the shape of mouth is smaller. As for nasal vowels, the difference is more obvious. In sound / /, the difference between QS and KL are very obvious, no matter for males or females. In/ / sound, the difference of males is more obvious than females. (3) About the duration of Qingshui female is longer than Qingshui male. Further, compare with Kaohsiung local citizens, QS male’s duration is longer than KL male’s besides /a/. For females, the duration of QS is longer than KL, but the difference of /a/ is not significant. About the nasalizes, the durations of males and females in Qingshui area are longer than Kaohsiung local citizens. In sound/ /, the difference is more obvious than others.
