碩士 === 國立臺北科技大學 === 工業設計系創新設計碩士班（碩士在職專班） === 103 === This study aimed to investigate the development and variation of bags form in Western and analyze the influence under the variation of different era. The first step to clarify the definition of bags and analyze the western apparel style. Then through the literature review to discuss the related researches of bags and historical developments. This study used historical research, textual analysis and observation method to collect and evaluate related literatures. The observation method was used for evaluation of bags sampling from the online repository of the Metropolitan Museum and filing 417 samples after aggregated . Through the historical development of Western bags based on the perspective of the development of human civilization, and literature research and the analysis of the form of bags. This study obtained closure structures including closing rope, frame, flip, zipper, flat; and carry types including clutch, handbag, wrist bag, shoulder bags, backpacks, waist bag. Furthermore, through the descriptive statistics contradistinguished with graphic and text, this study dissertated the development and variation of bags in the twentieth century. This study also clarify the tendency change of closure structure and carrying type in each major era through the comparison and analysis between of the different period within the hundred years. Therefore, this study found the intense competition between the frame and flip cover in Twentieth Century, this phenomenon could be continued in Twenty-first Century; or it will be the decline development of the closure structure after the height peak of growing. The wrist bag dominated the two-thirds of Twenty Century, and the shoulder bag was popular in the 1940s and 1970s. So the inference showed the relative change could be continue in Twenty-first Century. Finally, the development and variation of appearance forms of bags reflected the phenomenon of social development; and this showing the state of human living and moving. This study found that some historical events in some period were hard to define within the perspective of decade, especially the influence of the change disparity of the war in 40s.The 30-year cycle was found in trend change of bags in the Twentieth Century main based on the observation of the shoulder bag in 40s and 70s. This result reflecting the contextual relationship between the changes in human society and the civilization history.
