A good joint quality can increase the structural rigidity, safety, and durability of the exhaust pipe. This study investigated the electric resistance welding on the welding quality characteristics (tensile shear load and nugget size) of stainless steel automobile exhaust pipe weld quality. Under different process parameters, the study applied the L8 (27) orthogonal table of Taguchi experimental design and took interactions into consideration during the main experiments. Controlled factors in this experiment include: A (stress), B (power-on time), C (thermal current), D (initial stress time) and interactions (AB, AC, BC) and investigated the effects of welding parameters on tensile shear load and nugget. Analysis of variation was an important test used on the calculations of factors and confidence intervals. The results showed that the most significant impact of the quality characteristics was control factor B (power-on time) and C (thermal current). This was further validated by using optimized process parameters to analyze the confidence interval and hereby confirm that the Taguchi experimental design method can be applied to enhance the electric resistance welding of tensile shear load and nugget.
