碩士 === 國立臺南藝術大學 === 音樂學系碩士班 === 103 === This paper is based on Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky and includes six chapters. The first is a discussion of the reason for this research, Pictures at an Exhibition, and the method used for comparing the editions. Chapter two addresses the background of the era and is divided into three parts starting with an introduction to 19th-century Russian culture, the influence of the politics of the time and the development of Russian critical realism. The works of Ivan Kramskoi and Ilya Repin are used as examples for discussing the painting styles and contemporary society. The last describes the musical style of Mikhail Glinka and The Five. The importance of Russian musical education as promoted by the Rubinstein Brothers is also discussed. Chapter three investigates the background of this work, the cultivation and the musical style of Mussorgsky as well as his connection with the architect Victor Hartmann. In chapter four a comparison is made between the composer’s manuscript and the Bessel edition by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Vladimir Stasov that explains the superiority of the original Mussorgsky manuscript. Chapter five details an interpretation of this work in eleven parts. The discussion includes aspects of tempo, rhythm, melody, dynamics and pedal. Then, it describes the atmosphere of each piece in both objective and subjective views. Chapter six is an overview of the comparisons of form, key and tempo, and explains a connection to the images of death.
