Usually, according to the door exterior characteristic factors, such as material, color, door type, etc., users construct visual direct perception of door weight (VDPDW) so as to intuitively estimate the door operating force as well as decide the door opening strategies. However, if there are door unperceived factors, the expected door operating force would be not necessarily consistent with the actual door operation force. When significant difference between these two forces happens, not only psychologically surprise and frustration arise for users, but also fall injuries or accidents would occur due to the improper door operating behavior. In this study, taking hinged door with wood material for an example, the psychological impact and the operating behavior caused by the unexpected door operating force was explored, and thus door operating strategies how to improve these undesired effects were sought. Firstly, the effects of the door perceived factors on the VDPDW were conducted in the first experiment. The method of the conjoint analysis (CA) was adopted to establish a function of the VDPDW. The results by the application of the function revealed that the VDPDW can be effectively predicted, and thus a reference designing index used to design VDPDW can be established. Secondly, a force sensor fixture using putter door handle was especially designed so as to establish the door force measuring system. The measured method of the VDPDW was also set up, and thus three actually manufactured doors, including the heaviest door, medium weight door and the lightest door, were utilized to conduct the second experiment, the measurement of the VDPDW. The results showed that the developed designing index of the VDPDW can effectively predict the actual door operating force. Finally, the third experiment on the psychological impact due to unexpected door operating force was conducted. The experimental results revealed that when the design of the VDPDW is improved, the psychological impact due to unexpected door operating force can also be reduced effectively. Thus, the possibility to door design by the application of the VDPDW is put into practice. By the reference designing index of the VDPDW, the operating safety of users especially can be enhanced, and thus the universal design of the door can be achieved.
