The time division multiplexing (TDM) Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) has the least energy consumption among access network technologies and is the best candidate to improve the energy consumption by time utilization. Many studies have proposed schemes to turn off transmitter/receiver of the optical network unit (ONU) in EPON for substantial time to achieve the energy saving governed by OLT, called OLT-initiated energy-saving mechanism. In this paper, a new SIEPON based ONU-initiated energy-saving mechanism is introduced that ONUs are able to calculate the transmitter sleep duration (Tx) and forward it to the OLT that the OLT calculates the receiver sleep duration and decides the ONU’s sleeping whether in Tx or TRx mode. By this way, the ONU has more control over the transmitter sleep duration; moreover, the Sleep manager and Green DBA and TRx controller components are proposed to the OLT and ONU architecture to control the energy-saving mechanism. Simulation results show that the proposed energy-saving mechanism significantly improves the energy-saving ratios (up to 45%) in different traffic situations, and also promises the QoS performance in terms of mean packet delay, packet loss, throughput and jitter.
