Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立中正大學 === 英語教學研究所 === 104 === The study examined the quality of six English textbooks (especially the Grammar Focus section) used in a Taiwanese senior high school. The English textbook evaluation mainly focused on the match between the English textbooks and the English subject curriculum and the match between the English textbooks and the students’ learning needs on English grammar learning. The participants were 20 senior high school students and one English teacher. They were invited to fill in two sets of questionnaires and attend a follow-up interview. Their responses to the questionnaires and the interview were calculated and presented in percentages. The findings indicated that the English textbooks almost matched the English subject curriculum in respect of the guidelines for selecting English grammar rules for English textbooks. Most of the English grammar rules in the English textbooks were considered applicable for the students to use in written communication. In terms of the match between the English textbooks and the students’ learning needs on English grammar learning, the findings suggested that the English textbooks satisfied the students’ learning need of being able to use the English grammar rules and partially satisfied the learning need of being able to describe and explain the English grammar rules. However, the English textbooks appeared to fail to satisfy the learning need of being able to compare and detect the relationship between the English grammar rules. In conclusion, though the English textbooks almost matched the English subject curriculum to a large extent, they satisfied students’ learning needs on English grammar learning only to a limited extent.
