The re-examination and re-construction of fundamental concepts such as yin-yang theory, channel theory, Zangfu theory, qi transformation, etc'', may be considered as a shift of culture within the field of medicine. At the same time, the contribution of these discussions regarding the holism in Chinese medicine, may be said to be a shift in how medicine is perceived in our culture. The historical interplay between Chinese and Western medicine which occurred one-hundred years ago, seem to be once again taking the stage, primarily because many of the issues which arose during this interplay have yet been resolved. During the course of its development, Chinese medicine had absorbed many traditions which were of a distinct unique nature. It is due to this reason exactly that in recent years Chinese medicine has has virtually become the main modality among all alternative medicines. However, it is this heterogeneity of theories which has posed the greatest challenge when confronted by proponents of modern medicine. Despite having adopted several western medical ideas and scientific research methodology, with many of the foundational questions within Chinese medicine theory still unanswered, advocates of this medicine have a hard case to argue. Therefore, the goal of the book is to re-set the discussion into a cultural backdrop, and through the use of historical records, present five phase theory in its original milieu. By understanding the original appearance and knowledge surrounding five phase theory, the practice and employment of Chinese medicine will hopefully be grounded in stronger roots.
