Description
Summary:碩士 === 輔仁大學 === 音樂學系 === 104 === Dated back in the sixteenth century, the treatise Dialogo della Musica Antica et della Moderna written and published in 1581 by Vincenzo Galilei (ca. 1520-1591), who was one of the members of Florentine Camerata, had become the main topics of discussion in the Camerata, especially the style of monody arising from ancient Greeks. Since then, the members of Camerata had taken the general idea into experiment in many musical compositions. These pieces presented the transformation of musical style occurring in the late sixteenth century and early seventeenth century. Before Dialogo was published in 1581, correspondences between Mr. Galilei and Girolamo Mei (1519-1594), who studied ancient Greek music, had lasted for ten years. During this period of time, Vincenzo also visited Girolamo in person twice. Through analyzing the only five well-preserved letters, from which I collect six themes- melody, interval, scale, mode, instrumental music and instrument, and discourse, and Galilei’s major piece- Dialogo della Musica Antica et della Moderna, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the influence of Girolamo Mei on Vincenzo Galilei and compare and contrast the ideas between the two masters.
