During the second half of nineteenth century, nationalism rose. Musicians started to collect and apply the folk musical materials of their own nationality to compose, particularly, Czech composer Antonín Leopold Dvořák is one the most typical. He absorbed the German musical traditions from Western Europe, and applied ethnic elements of Slavic folk songs, dance music, in his compositions, which makes his repertoire filled with strong Czech musical characteristics. Furthermore, he promoted the Czech music to an artistic level.
Zigeunermelodien and Vier Lieder are Dvořák's works of his “Slavic Period”. This research focuses on the musical characteristics of Czech through the understanding of the history and the musical development. Furthermore, it takes a deep look at Dvořák's epoch and background in order to research on Zigeunermelodien and Vier Lieder to comprehend Dvořák's music style.
