The study analyzes the scholar image in The Scholars from the perspective of fame and fortune in addition to categorizing the scholar image of The Scholars, followed by conducting comparison and analysis on the scholars’ attitudes towards fame and fortune. Moreover, the study is expected to provide certain enlightening values for people in the process of pursuing philosophy and significance of self-life. The paper is divided into five chapters, as described in the following outline: Chapter 1 Introduction: This chapter describes the research motives and purpose, research cope and methods, and literature review. Chapter 2 Scholars vs. Fame and Fortune: A discourse on the scholar image in The Scholars from the perspective of “fame and fortune” that first analyzes the implications of scholars, supplemented by the conduct of the scholar in the Book of Rites and the scholar effect in Xunzi, to identify the highest conduct standards of scholars and their function and effect in state and society. The discourse establishes explicitly positive standards for the scholar image of the paper. The chapter also focuses on the exploration and analysis of the scholars’ attitudes towards “fame and fortune” from the periods before Qing Dynasty, Western and Eastern Hans, and the Song and Ming Dynasties. Chapter 3 “Types of scholar images in The Scholars” This chapter divides the mentality and conducts of scholars towards fame and fortune into four types. 1. Obsession with fame and fortune: (1) Scholars who do not flaunt to others. (2) Scholars who flaunt to others. 2. Scholars who rely on fame and fortune: (1) Scholars who do not flaunt to others. (2) Scholars who flaunt to others. 3. Scholars pretend to be uninterested in fame and fortune: (1) Scholars who cling to people of power and influence. (2) Scholars who are self-righteous. 4. Scholars decline fame and fortune: (1) Scholars who are willing to leave official position. (2) Scholars who resign from invitation but live in fame and fortune. Chapter 4 “Comparison of the scholars’ attitude towards fame and fortune,” Divided into three dimension of discourse: 1. The before-and-after comparison of scholars’ attitudes towards fame and fortune: (1) The before-and-after comparison of scholars’ attitudes towards the gain of fame and fortune in the scholar and other scholars, and the before-and-after comparison of scholars’ attitudes towards fame and fortune. 2. The comparison of scholars’ attitudes towards fame and fortune: Relying on fame and fortune and willing to leave official position but declining fame and fortune, obsessed with fame and fortune and resigning invitation but declining fame and fortune, and self-righteous scholars pretending to be uninterested in fame and fortune and scholars without clinging to people of power and influence.3. Comparison of time and space for scholars’ attitudes towards fame and fortune: Scenes at Qimao Lake, scene of Old Madam of Fang’s Family from Wuhe County and the relatives of Yu and Yu’s family entering the ancestral hall. Chapter 5 Conclusion: In conclusion, the study compares the results of types of scholar’s attitudes towards the image of fame and fortune, and towards fame and fortune, in addition to analyzing the direction for future research development.
