The Relationships among Parenting Style, Self-Esteem , Social Anxiety, and Addiction

As Internet addition may cause harm to individuals both physically and psychologically, the objective of this study is to explore the causes of Internet addition. Previous research has shown that Internet addition is affected by parenting style, self-esteem, and social anxiety but has not attempted to build a theoretical model to explain the relationship of these variables. To fill this gap, this study proposes a theoretical model of Internet addition with parenting style, self-esteem, and social anxiety as variables. The model is examined using data collected from an anonymous online survey of college students. Participants had to answer questions of “Perceived Parenting Style Scale”, “Self-esteem Scale”, “Social Anxiety Scale”, and “Internet Addition Tendency Scale”. A total of 597 valid responses were obtained. Results indicate that no matter in the overall model or in the theoretical model with perceived father’s or mother’s parenting style: (1) perceived parenting style has a direct effect on self-esteem; (2) perceived parenting style does not directly affect social anxiety but would affect it through self-esteem; (3) self-esteem is directly related to Internet addition; (4) social anxiety is directly related to Internet addition; (5) parenting style would affect Internet addition through self-esteem and also through self-esteem and social anxiety. These findings support the proposed model. Finally, theoretical implications, practical applications, and limitations of the findings are discussed.
