Summary: | 碩士 === 義守大學 === 應用英語學系 === 104 === There has been enormous number of Taiwanese working-class individuals going overseas in search of wives since the late 1980s. Many bride-immigrants are from Southeastern Asia (Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia; and etc.). According to Ministry of Education data (2014), there were 83,574 pupils, who were studying at elementary and secondary schools in Taiwan, that have Vietnamese mothers. There are many concerns related to language proficiency, teasing and educational progress related to these new Taiwanese children when they go to school. Thus, this study aims to investigate effects of Vietnamese mothers’ Chinese language proficiency on their Taiwanese children’s development. The study employed a qualitative method, particularly individual interviews, to collect relevant data. There were 9 mothers and 9 children invited to the interview process. The results from the study show that effects of Vietnamese mothers’ language proficiency are minor if their children spend more time communicating with native speakers, especially after they go to school. However, mothers seldom have role in supporting their children to do school homework and teach their children other aspects of Taiwanese culture. Many of them also cannot teach their children the Vietnamese language due to time constraints and limited opportunities. The study shows that most children consider that their mothers’ overall Chinese proficiency is not good. Which is a perception shared by the mothers regarding their overall Chinese language proficiency.
