Summary: | 碩士 === 國立中興大學 === 圖書資訊學研究所 === 104 === As mobile devices become part of our daily lives, the issues of information carried by digital and traditional media attract more attention. The information could be presented in a more diverse way when it is stored in digital format. The creators could integrated text, images, sound and special effects to present the same piece of information and make it looks like new work. The change of presentation does not only transform the appearance, but also alters the reading behavior and what the readers see reading is.
To reveal the impact of presentation of information on reading behavior, the author took a quasi-experiment approach, invited 20 college students to participate the study, read three chosen works in different formats to enclose the differences in reading speed and reading comprehension, and the factors that influence the reading behavior. Questionnaire, observation, interview and post-test were used for data collection and analysis steps based on ground theory were adopted for data analysis.
The results show that with highly familiarity on digital materials and heavy Internet surfers, the students still prefer read printed materials unless there are specific purposes, such as required for study. Comparing the reading speed of reading materials in various presentations, it is found that the participants that read the text in “scrolling continuous” format demonstrated the best performance in reading speed, as well as the reading comprehension. “Text and images mixed” format helps the participants to have short-term memory about the content constructed. Besides the presentations, user friendly interface, layout of text, amount of information included on one page and availability of notes taking functions also give participants different reading experience and affect reading behavior.
