Traditional transaction has been replaced by cross border e-commerce, and product types and transaction numbers have thus changed. This indicates that business models and consumer behaviors have diversified as well. The traditional international trade has now entered into the era of cross-border e-commerce, which is a trend unstoppable. E-commerce has proliferated in recent years, and it is growing at a tremendous pace especially in Asia. With the market size expanding in China, the transaction process of cross-border e-commerce has also been sped up. China is now the world’s largest e-commerce market, and Taiwan, situated in this most mature and competitive market with 20 years of e-commerce experience, still faces potential competition when China’s e-commerce firms enter the local market. Therefore, this paper will discuss and analyze the e-commerce enterprise competitiveness across the strait, and identify the bottlenecks for cross-border e-commerce development in Taiwan. The current study conducts a SWOT analysis using Taobao.com in China and Yahoo! Shopping in Taiwan as examples. It then adopts a qualitative approach to investigate the advantages and status of future development of cross-border e-commerce in Taiwan. Specifically, it interviews experts in the field, businesses of related industries, and representative consumers to analyze the e-commerce enterprise competitiveness across the strait from three aspects: competitive environment, market trend, and policy advice. This research provides implications for cross-border e-commerce enterprises in business operation and planning, in hope to increase the potential of development of Taiwanese enterprises, expand business services, and create win-win outcomes.
