Adopt property-liability insurers from 1996 to 2012 as our sample, we examine the relationship between the mainstream religious beliefs and insurer loss reserve error. Empirical results show that property-liability insurers with headquarter located in the region with higher gambling preference have higher degree of loss reserve error. After a series of robustness checks, the results are still supported. Even though in bad times of insurance industry, financial crisis and the condition under enactment of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, the results still keep. Finally, we find there are no significant influences on the relationship between local gambling preference and insurer loss reserve error for mutual and stock P/L insurers.
