Through identification of place names, it is probable to interpret the local topography, hydrology, land utilization and settlement distribution. In the past, people referred to place names as where they lived. As regime entered, the place was governed by various methods from the respective regimes, like the villages and characters from Japanese colony as well as the street names from National Government . The thesis aims to observe the characteristics which different regimes tended to perform in Yilan City via the analyses of place names. The Qing Dynasty government did not interfere much with the governance of Yilan City, so did the street naming. Relatively, the adopted governance was about indulgence, so the street names were mostly from residents themselves. During Japanese colony, Yilan City conducted the urban correction and planning to turn the old city into new look for governance demands. They formed the space concept by combining households and lands in order to manage people. At the early stage of Yilan City, the place names were named according to the names from Qing Dynasty. With the urban renewal and upgrading of Yilan City, the city correction movement was implemented to replace the street names with the town names full of Japanese imagery. When the national government ruled, they replaced and cleaned the group memories by renaming the street names for the purpose of de-Japanisation and chinization. During the renaming process, there have been many Chinese street names as well as street names of local imagery. With the increasing strength of local self-government, the contextual factors of naming streets has become diverse. In addition to the local characteristics, the economic benefits generated from the naming can be considered one of the keypoint. Wen Chuan-Huang 黃雯娟 2016 學位論文 ; thesis 101 |
