Summary: | 碩士 === 國立高雄師範大學 === 華語文教學研究所 === 104 === Macau had been a colony of Portugal for a long time. Portuguese is an official language before Macau’s return to China in 1999. In schools, teachers at elementary schools pay more attention in vocabulary than text structure, so students’ writings are lack of logical structure, especially lack of connection between sentences. This study first reviewed previous studies about adverbial conjunctions, and discussed students’ basic competence and reading environments in Macau. Since both Hong Kong and Macau speak Cantonese, and have similar lexicon, the researcher also reviewed some previous studies on the so called “Hong Kong-style Chinese”. In the present study, 67 Chinese narrative compositions written by primary school students in Macau were collected. The researcher found that adverbs of time, such as shǒuxiān, ránhòu, were the most common in students’ narrative writings, and adverbs of inference, such as yěxǔ, are not common in the compositions. The study also found that adverbs of addition, such as hái, yě, dōu, were affected by Cantonese, i.e. the students’ mother tongue. The researcher suggests that teachers can use comparative teaching methods to compare the differences of adverb between Cantonese and Mandarin, and schools can also hold Script Writing contests to help students to master different kinds of adverbs.
