To improve such problem, applying Classcraft system seems a feasible method based on literature review. The followings are the purposes of this study: (1) to explore the effects of applying gamification as the teaching strategy on eighth graders’ English learning motivation; (2) to explore the effects of applying gamification as the teaching strategy on eighth graders’ English learning achievement; (3) to reveal the process of applying Classcraft system in English class; (4) to understand the feedback from the students about applying Classcraft system in English class and teacher’s reflection and growth in profession. The action study was adopted. The 26 subjects, 11 boys and 15 girls, are eighth graders from the researcher’s class. The teaching lasted for fourteen weeks. There were 4 to 5 classes every week, and each class lasted for 45 minutes. Thus, the teaching strategy was implemented in 61 classes (about 46 hours). The quantitative data of English learning motivation and learning achievement were collected and analyzed with paired t-test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Some of qualitative data collected from the observation and reflection of the researcher and critical friends, and the feedback of the students were analyzed to present the process and the findings of this study. The followings are the findings of this study: (1) the application of Classcraft system can improving the student’s English learning motivation, which was influenced by sense of novelty; (2) the application of Classcraft system can improve the low-achievement students’ English learning achievement, but the effect was maintained with difficulty for high-achievement students; (3) the interaction among group members was the main problem for implementing the teaching strategy, and different dimensions of methods were needed as the solution; (4) The subjects regarded the interaction among group members and competition between groups of the action plan as a helpful strategy to learn pronunciation and patterns better; (5) the defects of the researcher’s instruction and the ways of self-relief were discovered and improved during this study. Finally, the researcher provided some suggestions based on the results of the study.
