Most rescue operations rely on workers to probe the disaster sites, which could be hazardous. Using autonomous patrol vehicle to perform such operations can reduce the necessity of risking the worker’s lives. In this thesis, a wireless remote autonomous patrol vehicle for detecting human lives is developed. The patrol vehicle is equipped with a smartphone for taking photos. The benefits of using a smartphone are that it is universal, highly portable, and has good communication capabilities. The rescuers can know the situation of the disaster sites by viewing the photos. The patrol vehicle uses passive infrared to detect life, and uses ultrasound to do obstacle avoidance. The patrol vehicle can search the disaster site to know whether human lives exist and the safety of entering the site. These informations are passed through an Arduino Yun Wi-Fi interface to the rescuers, so that they can monitor the disaster site and make rescue decisions remotely.
