This study analyzed three clinical workers’ experiences of infant observation research. Based on the qualitative research method, the study collected all data by means of interviewing and used content analysis to interpret the context. The study is in purpose of understanding the meaning of three clinical workers’ experiences of infant observation.
According to the finding from this study, the interviewees who participated the infant observation research were based on the reasons of professional training, personal interest, the supervisor’s concern and the seeking for sense of belonging. While looking for an infant, it was difficult for them to start. The meaning of relationships crossing parents, infant and our observers, as the researcher, was in need of thinking after the interview with the family. Once they entered the family, the observer would find an observation position and figure out the object to focus on. Through the supervisor group and the setting of observation framework, the observation position would be clarified gradually. Keep playing the role as an observer, the observer were in a conflict between humanity and personality/characteristic. Also, the observation situation aroused the observer’ s emotional experiences which the countertransference could be self aware of. With the assistance from the supervisor group, the observers kept reforming their inner experiences and rethinking of the external world. The experiences of infant observation research make the interviewees’ capabilities developed. Not only did they expand their mental space, but strengthen the ability to perceive countertransference, to meditate, to govern the intention of acting out, and to tolerate the unknown and the uncertainty. In respect of their clinical professional specialties, they understand their clients to a greater extent and make the best use of the working group to contain.
In conclusion, based on the finding from this studying, several suggestions were brought out for those who work in the field of future research, professional psychological counseling training program, infant and family services and infant observation research.
