A personal smart drug box to remind the patient of taking medicine is therefore derived. This study aims to design a personal drug dispensing machine with the functions of reminder and real-time drug dispensing for chronic patients and the elderly. Six cells and a rotary drug reservoir to control drugs dropping into the gate are covered in this system. Meanwhile, in order to enhance the stability of a gate controlling the quantity of dropped drugs, each drug cell is designed various replaceable drug dispensing tubes, according to the sizes and shapes of drugs, and a button for the patient taking the medicine. The rotation of drug cells and the drug dispensing procedure are controlled with a micro-controller, and the quantity and the time to take the medicine are set by a mobile phone. The data transmission between the drug dispensing machine and the mobile phone is communicated with Bluetooth. For the convenient operation, a user-friendly frame with the setting of medicine taking time and quantity, data transmission, Bluetooth connection, and off-line control is designed on the mobile phone. The experimental tests prove that the drug dispensing machine designed in this study reveals 90% dropping accuracy on three sizes of round pills and a capsule commonly used for chronic diseases. Meanwhile, the drug dispensing machine presents two operating modes. When the normal mode is set, the drug dispensing machine would real-time dispense drugs before the patient taking the medicine so as to prevent the drugs from mutual influence caused by long-term concentration before been taken as well as to avoid the patient repeatedly taking the medicine.
