Foreign Japanese learners usually start learning intransitive and transitive verbs from early stage, but many of them still have difficulties using those verbs correctly even when reaching intermediate level. So it’s quite clear that learning intransitive and transitive verbs is quite a difficult task for those whose native tongue doesn’t share similar grammar. Therefore, by using the three and a half year composition data from LARP at SCU (Language Acquisition Research Project at Soochow University) , I aim to research on how the intransitive and transitive verbs are used in the composition, in which stages are those verbs used and thus find out where the difficulties in learning it lies. This study adopts the intransitive and transitive verbs from “Standard tests for Japanese Proficiency Test, revised edition”, and the definition of Okutu(1976)as the standard for researching. This study is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction which explains the motivation and the purpose of the research. The second chapter is the precedence research, in which I collected and categorized the relative studies of the intransitive and transitive verbs mentioned in Japanese linguistic and Japanese teaching. The third chapter is the research outline, explaining the subject and the methods applied in the research. The fourth chapter is the analysis, in which five subjects are being analyzed in the attempt for finding why the subjects make mistakes when using intransitive and transitive verbs. The fifth chapter is the conclusion, a conclusive comment is made for the condition on how Japanese learners use intransitive and transitive verbs in their composition, and how the result of the research can be used in further Japanese teaching related studies.
