Upgrading existing power system to a smart one became one of the solution that may slow down the impact to the environment. To modernize the power systems, upgrading the traditional substations to modern substations is one of the important tasks. Monitoring of the operation of power systems plays an important role in Smart grid. To realize the modernization of power system controls, applications of proper industrial communication protocols to collect and control the IEDs installed in modern substation is needed. With the power system properly monitored, the energy transmission can be more effectively.The reliability of the power system operation can be improved as well. There are numerous communication protocols used in modern power systems.Some of these protocols are not able to fulfill the rapid development of IEDs. To achieve the modernization of power system monitoring and control, the Client-Server model of IEC61850 was proposed. The principle of the Client-Sever model of IEC61850 is to virtualize the physical device and create the data model by the ACSI Service. Then mapping the data models which is encoded by ASN.1 to the MMS protocol. By exchanging the MMS message to realize the target of monitoring the power system. This thesis implements an MMS Server and an MMS Client in order to study the client/server architecture of IEC61850. A commercial client software and an IED are used to verify the functions of developed MMS server and client.
