He spent most of his life in Russia, spanning from the Russian Empire ( 1721-1917 ) , Lenin period ( 1917-1924 ) , Stalin period ( 1929-1953 ) , Khrushchev period ( 1953-1964 ) , to Brezhnev period ( 1964-1982 ) . His musical style and color also changed with the times. The work “Sonata for Cello and Piano in D Minor, Opus 40, 1934” studied in this thesis was the earliest one among Shostakovich’s three duo works for the solo instruments and the piano. In this work Shostakovich not only combination of traditional and modern composition techniques, but also inherited the Nationalism features, used folk music material and the compositional techniques of the 20th century, such as mode scale, polytonality and pantonality, which made his works possessed of a distinctive personal characteristics and national color. The thesis is organized as follows: Chapter one is an introduction of this thesis. Chapter two introduces the composer’s life and the characteristics of the work. Chapter three explores the work analysis and interpretation from the perspectives of the collaborative piano. The conclusion is made in Chapter four.
