Based on the idea, “Liquid Writing: Video as a Sculpture,” this article is to discuss the different characteristics of these two mediums and, giving the fact that “materialism” is the essence of sculpture, to figure out what the materialism of video would be when it were taken as a form of sculpture. Taking materialism beyond its definition of physical matter, to a broader interpretation as traces of objects or processes of activities, we could say that the changes and transformations generated between executer and its object are material. Hence video could be another form of sculpture that either transforms or interferes the relationships. The artist derived this idea of breaking down the closed definitions of two elements and combining them together from the concept of “liquefy tool” of PHOTOSHOP. This function is often used to modify photo images by blurring out the border of two color areas and make the boundary warp to reshape the figures. People use it to make the body seem leaner, face smaller, and eyes bigger on the photo. Liquefying is a movement curving the boundary of two objects, and it’s not dissolving. The original element A will not be just A any more, however, when the borderline was blurred and warped; it will include a bit of element B yet not completely become into B. Liquefying is a broaden hypothetical interpretation of materialism. As the pixel of boundary becomes fuzzy, the inner object will flow outward and make contact with outer fields, thus yields room for discussions. Liquefying can also be seemed as a method of deconstructing binary oppositions and as a way of exploring and discussing the relationships among two or more subjects. In this thesis, I will also discuss in detail the relationship between video and sculpture in my work and liquid-writing as my working approach. 張乃文 2016 學位論文 ; thesis 34 zh-TW
