To adapt to the rapidly and intensively competitive environment, what professional competencies should patternmakers have to be qualified for diverse work demands in order to improve competitive advantage is the focus of this study. This study was aggregated through literatures, and 15 experts in this field were invited to interview and consult. By revisions and analysis of experts in Modified Delphi, it was constructed professional competencies of garment patternmakers, which composed of four dimensions, including “professional knowledge”, “professional skills”, “professional ability”, and “other personal chararcteristics”. Among these four dimensions were 9 categories, comprised “basic knowledge”, “tools knowledge”, “tailor knowledge”, “material knowledge”, “pattern-making techniques”, “typesetting and cutting”, “sewing”, “ability attainment”, and “professional attitude”,totalin 72 indexes. There were 149 available questionnaires taken back for this study of garment patternmakers in total. These data were analyzed using Descriptive Statistics and two-way ANOVAby SPSS version 12.0. The results in this study were as follows: the most important professional competency which garment patternmakers should have is “professional skills”, and “other personal chararcteristics” is secondary. The category “pattern-making technique” is the most vital among “professional skills” . The category “tailor knowledge” is the most vital among “professional knowledge” . This study also indicated that the results would be diverse on account of the thoughts of importance of what professional competencies should a garment patternmaker have and being compared with different personal background variables and situational background variables. By post hoc comparison, we found that the importance of professional competency will be influenced on the interaction between different situational background variables and different individual background variables. We anticipate providing schools and vocational training institutions with these research findings for their curriculumplanning and adjustment. The aims are to allow the professional competency of trainees to meet the requirements of industry. As a standard for employers to recruit and select their new staff, or for in-service staffadvanced studies to improve individual ability, moreover.
