碩士 === 臺北市立大學 === 英語教學系 === 104 === This study examines the themes of diaspora that are developed in Allen Say’s picturebooks and graphic memoirs. Say is distinctive in his exploration of diaspora through words and pictures. The study is comprised of three chapters, of which the first chapter provides background and purpose of the study. Chapter Two examines the themes of diaspora identity through the verbal text (naming) and pictorial images of appearance, and clothing in Say’s picture books. Chapter Three discusses the issues of cultural differences through Say’s description of arts and crafts. It also examines two of his graphic memoirs which depict the way Say’s cultural heritage is shaped by Asian and American cultures. The study demonstrates that Say’s books deal with diaspora who struggle for their self-identities between homelands. Keywords: diaspora, picturebook, graphic memoir, Allen Say
