Students somehow had difficulty in it. Even though they possessed knowledge about rhythm and recorder playing, regarding recorder duet performances, students struggled over identifying beat division, playing the recorder with a steady tempo, performing skillfully with correct tonguing and fingering in register-changing passages, as well as utilizing good breathing to act out complete phrases. It thus raised the difficulty level of conducting recorder duet instruction in music curriculum. Because of all these, the researcher designed a feasible curricular plan to help elevate students’ basic rhythm and recorder playing skills as well as to foster the researcher’s professional development. Accordingly, this study aimed to investigate whether instruction in students’ basic rhythm skills and recorder playing skills helped elevate their recorder duet performances. An action study was conducted with the qualitative resources forming the major data collection and analysis approach. The teaching subjects were the researcher’s 42 fifth-grade students — 22 boys and 20 girls—from the Free-of-care Elementary School ( pseudonym) in Taipei City. The curriculum was developed mainly based on Grade 1-9 Curriculum Guidelines. The instructional content covered rhythm identification knowledge and skills, duets teaching as well as recorder duets performances. Besides the sessions for pretest and posttest, 18 lessons were implemented in three stages in which each stage dealt with two themes. Studying instruments consisted of “Pretest in Rhythm,” “Form for Students’ Study Record,” “Form for Class Observation Record,” “Students’ Study Sheet,” “Form for Students’ Feedback” as well as “Teacher’s Reflection Journal.” Conclusions were drawn as follows: Firstly, the improvement of students’ basic rhythm skills in rhythm identification and beat stabilization did help elevate students’ recorder duet performances. Secondly, the improvement of students’ performing skillfully with correct tonguing and fingering in register-changing passages as well as utilizing good breathing to act out complete phrases did help elevate students’ recorder duet performances. Thirdly, the action research process of designing, implementing, reflecting and revising rhythm and recorder playing curriculum helped foster the researcher’s professional development. The researcher, based on the research process and findings, proposed related suggestions for references. Lin, Hsiao-Yu 林小玉 2016 學位論文 ; thesis 163 zh-TW
