Methods: The ambulatory visit files at academic medical centers from the National Health Insurance Research Database in 2009 were analyzed. Only a visit with physician consultation would be considered but no emergency visit included. Descriptive statistics and Market-Basket Analysis were used to analyze the outpatient department utilization. Results: There were 4,904,459 eligible people with 21,401,732 physician consultations. At academic medical centers, the most frequent consulted specialty was the division of cardiology (8.42%). In association rules, the most frequent diagnoses was disease of the circulatory system (14.43%, n=45,899,324)。The frequent itemsets were diseases of the digestive system and symptoms, signs and ill-defined conditions, or endocrine, nutritional, and metabolic diseases and immunity disorders, or malignant neoplasms, or disease of the circulatory system, or diseases of the respiratory system. Conclusion: There would be higher likelihood of intensive using the outpatient department, when over 45 year-old people, non co-payment policy, with chronic diseases. In addition, the number of outpatient visits of chronic was 11,477,125 (53.63%), the issue of outpatient crowding at Academic Medical Centers was more and more patients with chronic diseases and increase over the years.
