Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立雲林科技大學 === 應用外語系 === 104 === For thousands of years it has been recorded that devout believers who constantly chant Buddhist sutras received spiritual response thereof. High King sutra has been in circulation for more than a thousand years and devout believers reportedly received responses from chanting it. However, until now few related studies have been found in Taiwan. The present study is therefore aimed at investigating the issue of spiritual responses from devout believers who constantly chant High King sutra. Literature review on High King sutra mainly draws on commentaries by Master Sheng-yen Lu, founder of the True Buddha School, and the interviewees for the study are believers from Taiwan Lei Zhang Temple. The research methods were observations and interviews. Semi-structured interviews were conducted on the sutra chanters to understand their subjective religious experiences. A qualitative analysis was done on the interview records to find the spiritual responses from chanting the High King sutra in Taiwan. It has been found that the deep-rooted mentality that chanting sutras can shun evils and receive protection is very much alive, and that turning the merits of chanting sutras to other people can bring many benefits to the chanters.
