[(Pd(2-Phpy))2C18N2O4-(CS2)2] (1) is a dinuclear structure with Pd(II) in a square-planar coordination environment. The C18N2O4(CS2)2 ligand uses each CS2 moiety to coordinate with the Pd(II) center. When we use Pt(II) instead of Pd(II), a isomorphous compound has been obtained to be [(Pd(2-Phpy))2C18N2O4-(CS2)2] (2). When [(μ-Cl)Pt(C^N-bzq)]2 replaces [(μ-Cl)M(C^N-2-Phpy)]2, a similar dinuclear [(Pt(C^N-bzq))2C18N2O4-(CS2)2] (3) is obtained. It is noted that the reaction of Pt(bpy)Cl2 with C18N2O4-(CS2)2 leads to the formation of a cage-like structure, [Pt(C18N2O4-(CS2)2)] (4). It is thought that there is no close metalmetal contact in the solid state, and this is possibly due to the steric hindrance of C18N2O4-(CS2)2. To investigate the correlation between the luminescence and solvent guests, we carry out studies regarding mechanical grinding of 2 and 3 with various solvents. We found addition of benzene will greatly enhance the luminescence upon grinding, and hence we think compound 2 can show significant selectivity toward benzene.
