Furthermore, the temperature increase in Taiwan is higher when compared to global data. In addition, the Urban Heat Island effect is more serious in Taiwan due to the large concentration of city population. In summer, the temperature difference between Taiwan city center and its surrounding area can be as large as 3 to 4℃. Green Roof, by definition, is the effective use of the roof of the building that transforms the space into a colorful, low-maintenance roof garden. Due to the fact that the weather of Taiwan is good for plant growth, it is quite suitable to promote building Green Roof in Taiwan as a mean to compensate for the lack of green space and reduce the Urban Heat Island effect. The purpose of this study is to collect and analyze information on different types of existing Green Roof and to summarize the assessment factors that will affect the choosing of Green Roofs. The goal is to provide schools with guidelines for building a Green Roof so that teachers and students can enjoy the benefits that a Green Roof provides. In order to properly select the best school building to build the Green Roof, the following condition must be observed : (1) the condition of the building, (2) the climate that the building resides, (3) the structure of the proposed “Green Roof” type and (4) the cost of Green Roof maintenance management. Assess the status of the building and the amount of budget, carefully select the appropriate type of the Green Roof is the most important decision when building a Green Roof. Among these factors, the condition of the building and the external climate are regarded as innate factors; green roof structure system and management and maintenance cost are regarded as the external factors. The study shows, by using the criteria outlined above, the most suitable type of Green Roof for the Hsin-I Building at Hsinchu Municipal Zai Xi Elementary School is Extensive iii Green Roof . According to the information provided by the General Affairs Office of Zai Xi Elementary School, the total area on the roof of Hsin-I Building is about 912.66m2 .
