P. Martin (丁韙良,1827-1916), who is an American missionary mainly working in the Northern China in the 19th century, while he encountered the event of the siege of legations in Beijing by the Boxer (Yihetuan, 義和團) around 1900. As an eye witness of the international event, he published the book, introducing in details concerning the event right after back to the U.S. The siege of the Beijing legations originated in the chaos after the Boxer spread to Zhili province (直隸省), so that foreigners in China urged Qing government to take effective measures as soon as possible. But the problem of the Boxers wasn’t solved, so that foreign countries intended to transfer troops into Beijing first. Shortly after, the foreign militaries occupied the Taku (大沽) fort. According to Martin, the Qing government was not able to control the Boxer movement, not to protect the legations in Beijing. As foreign countries could not get in touch with its troops, after taking tough measures, its relationship between Qing government and the Boxers was changed, and the legations also be besieged for a long time. Eventually, the Qing dynasty was in conflict with the foreign countries, against the world. PAN,FENG-CHUAN 潘鳳娟 2017 學位論文 ; thesis 99 zh-TW
